Peugeot has a rich hot-hatch history dating back to the iconic 205 GTi in the 1980s. Over four decades, models like the 205, 306, 206 and 208 GTi cemented the brand’s reputation for fun, sporty small cars. After a hiatus of about five years without a GTi, Peugeot is bringing the badge back – but this time in an all-electric form.

The new E-208 GTi reinterprets Peugeot’s GTi DNA in a modern way, combining classic cues with electric power.
Peugeot unveiled the E-208 GTi during the 24 Hours of Le Mans weekend, underlining its ties to motorsport. It is officially the first “100% electric” Peugeot to wear the GTi badge. The brand even notes that the reveal at Le Mans was intentional – Peugeot Sport applied lessons from its World Endurance Championship efforts (like the 9X8 Hypercar) to this road car. In short, the E-208 GTi marks a bold return to the hot-hatch arena for Peugeot, now entering the EV age.

Under the hood, the E-208 GTi’s electric motor is rated at 280 horsepower and 345 Nm of torque. As before with GTi models, it drives the front wheels only. That power bump is substantial: it is about 125 hp more than the standard E-208. With it, the little hot hatch will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in around 5.7 seconds. (In US-style terms, 0–62 mph takes about 5.7 s and top speed is limited to ~180 km/h.) All told, this gives the E-208 GTi the best acceleration of any car in its class.

Peugeot Sport also upgraded the chassis for sharper handling. The ride height is dropped by about 30 mm and the track is widened (roughly 56 mm at the front, 25–27 mm at the rear). The suspension has firmer springs, new dampers with hydraulic bump stops, and a thicker rear anti-roll bar to reduce body roll. Peugeot fitting ultra-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires (215/40-18) underscores the performance intent. Other hardware includes a limited-slip differential in the front transaxle for better cornering grip, plus larger 355 mm front brake rotors with four-piston calipers for more consistent braking. A dedicated “Sport” mode even lets the driver dial back driver aids for track use.

Styling cues inside and out give plenty of nods to Peugeot’s heritage. The E-208 GTi wears a bright red paint as standard – a salute to the classic 205 GTi color – along with blacked-out wheel arches and subtle GTi badging. Even the alloy wheels reference the old “pepperpot” style and are emblazoned with a red GTi logo. Inside, red accents abound: red carpets, stitching, and seatbelts recall the GTi tradition. The seats are especially eye-catching, with integrated headrests and a central red stripe inspired by the 205 GTi. Peugeot also gave the digital displays and ambient lighting a red theme. Overall, the design fuses modern tech (like a digital cockpit) with retro GTi spirit in a tasteful way.

The E-208 GTi was engineered by Peugeot Sport in France, applying motorsports expertise to a small EV. It is the first all-electric model designed by the Peugeot Sport team. As a result, performance parts and tuning are top-notch. In terms of rivals, Peugeot has beaten several manufacturers to market. For example, the E-208 GTi’s 280 hp matches the output promised by Abarth’s upcoming electric 500e (600e) model, and it arrives well before any Volkswagen electric GTI (VW’s ID.2 GT is still years away). In fact, Peugeot’s motorsport boss proudly notes this is now the quickest-accelerating GTi Peugeot has ever made. This puts it ahead of electric Minis and even the new Cupra Born in straight-line speed, while still holding a classic GTi’s agility.

Sadly for American fans, Peugeot has no plans to sell the E-208 GTi in the U.S. Peugeot exited North America years ago and this model will stay a European offering. Still, the E-208 GTi represents a new chapter for Peugeot’s performance cars. It shows how the brand is translating its sporty heritage into the electric era. With strong power, sharp handling, and lively styling all in a practical package, the E-208 GTi stands as a statement that fun electric hatchbacks can have GTi spirit – even if it’s not coming to an American driveway.
