BMW North America recalls over 58,700 vehicles with issues in vehicles’ air conditioning wiring system. Documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show the affected vehicles were produced between the 2024 model year and the 2026 model years.

According to the document linked to the recall, the BMW models affected may be equipped with an air conditioning wiring harness that could have been damaged during the replacement of the cabin air filter. As a result, the damaged wiring harness can short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.

The recall covers certain BMW models, including about 277 M5 Tourings and 1647 M5 sedans; 983 units of the 550 xDrive and the electric i5 were also affected, totaling about 11,917 of the recalled. The remaining are under the 7 series manufactured between 2023 and 2025; about 15,154 units are recalled, the 2023 to 2025 MY i7 has about 7,503, and lastly, the 2024 to 2025 MY 750e xDrive has about 794 of them recalled.

BMW plans to send owners notification letters to affected customers on April 13 with the steps to take their vehicles to their nearest dealership, where inspection on the air-conditioning wiring harness will be done and any damaged ones will be replaced if they come across them.

To prevent any future incidents connected with the recall from appearing, a new retainer clip will be installed on every model. All the processes of inspection and replacement will be done for free, and those who wouldn’t wait till April to know if your car is affected can reach out to BMW at 1-800-525-7417. The NHTSA tool won’t be live till April 13; that would be a better process to know the status of your car in connection with the recall.
