Under Mercedes’s new “Sensual Purity” design theme, the upcoming GLC electric SUV sports a bold new front end. Mercedes describes the refreshed grille as “a face for the future” ushering in a new era of iconic design. This marks a departure from the smooth, rounded look of earlier EQ electric models. The GLC EV – the battery-powered version of Mercedes’s compact luxury SUV – will be the first model to wear this illuminated grille.
Mercedes design chief Gorden Wagener says the new grille will be instantly recognizable. “Our new iconic grille is not just a new front for the GLC; it redefines the face of our brand,”It is the perfect fusion of lasting design codes reinterpreted for the future.”
In other words, the illuminated grille blends classic Mercedes styling cues with futuristic lighting. The goal is to give the car a distinctive Benz identity, even before you see its silhouette.
The all-new GLC EV and its grille will debut in full at the IAA Mobility show in Munich on September 7, 2025. Mercedes confirms this will be the first car with the new grille, but it won’t be the last. Future Mercedes vehicles – including upcoming gas and hybrid models – will also adopt versions of the new grille. In short, the GLC EV is just the start of a company-wide grille redesign strategy.
The grille itself is a grid of tiny squares filled with LEDs. In its full form it contains 942 individual backlit elements across the face. These LEDs can animate in patterns – for example, a light “greeting” when the driver unlocks the car.
Even the large Mercedes star in the center and the outline of the grille glow when activated. Mercedes notes the bright version is optional; buyers can choose a plain chrome frame and smoked-glass inserts if they prefer a more subdued look.

The pixelated grid motif is a nod to Mercedes heritage. Company materials point out that a 1902 Mercedes Simplex race car featured a honeycomb grille of small square tubes – an early example of the grid design. Mercedes even arranged a “gallery” of vintage grilles at the Munich reveal to show this lineage. The square-tube theme reappeared in the 1950s and has cropped up in various forms over the decades.
Mercedes says the flashy animated grille will remain optional on all models. Buyers who dislike the full LED show can simply order the non-illuminated grille variant. Over time, this grille design will migrate to the rest of the Mercedes lineup.
