It has been a decade since Mercedes built a cabriolet version. Since the launch of the now G-Wagon back in 2018, the lineup has never received a Cabrio treatment—maybe two or three, but from tuners, like one from Brabus with suicide doors.
The last time Mercedes went on to build a regular soft top version of the off-roader it brought up an exclusive 2018 G650 Landaulet Maybach edition, but its production was limited, and only 99 units went on sale.
Now Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the G-Class lineup will have a Cabriolet version after the automaker released some teaser photos that went along with the announcement.
The photo shows a new vehicle in darkness, and it seems to adopt the Landaulet style profile with its roof edges extending to its rear. The previous generation G-Class Cabriolet had a shorter roof, and there is plenty of chance that the new model will have rear doors; this would work out since the company’s latest SUV is sold out with four doors.
Since its powers and performance are under wraps, we may expect Mercedes to give it a gas powertrain rather than being fully electric like the G580 introduced last year. The G450d may also get the convertible treatment because of its global availability.
We don’t expect the new G-Class Cabriolet to be close to the extreme of the old Landaulet, which used a portal axle and featured a V12 engine. When a portal axle was used, it was an AMG version used in the G63 4×4²; now the model is branded as a Benz, and we expect it to be a regular G550 that has a folding fabric roof.
One thing that the company confirmed to various news sources, like Car and Driver, is that it plans to bring the new Cabriolet to various parts of the market worldwide, with the US and Europe being a few of the countries that would set eyes on it first.
Mercedes-Benz hasn’t given the exact time when the new Cabriolet is expected, but we may see it added sometime in the 2026 model year. Pricing may start at $150,400 for the standard destination fee included.
