Rwanda is positioning itself at the forefront of Africa’s automotive future by embracing electrification, exploring flying car technology, and laying the groundwork for hosting Formula 1 in the future.
Earlier this month Rwanda was conducting some tests of self-flying passenger eVTOL craft known as the EHANG EH216-S, which only carries two people without a pilot. They flew it 100 meters over Kigali, which was a short experience but historic to the country.
The staging was held on September 4th during the Africa Aviation Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, which started on September 4-5, 2025.The project was a partnership between Rwanda, EHang, and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), which showcasesthe future of aviation.

In a statement by Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure Jimmy Gasore, he said that the country is actively building a future where there is more connection in the cities and their economy is more dynamic through innovative transport.
China Road and Bridge Corporation and Ehang are also conducting some tests of the same aircraft in Asia and the Middle East; this project, once complete, will position Rwanda in the same room with Dubai, Paris, Beijing, or the United States, as they have already tested the self-flying passenger eVTOL or Air Taxi.
