McLaren’s new car posted on their Instagram seems to feature a manual transmission. In a … minute long video, they begin showing one of the few M6GT prototypes that were built in the late 60s, which may likely inspire building the new model.
If it’s possible to feature a manual transmission, it could be the first car in the brand that includes a manual gearbox in nearly 30 years.
The footage clearly shows a McLaren M6GT, which was developed at the end of the 1960s to be part of a group of four road cars that are capable of competing at Le Mans. At that time the M6GT was inspired by the M6A race car that was so successful in the 60s at Can-Am racing.
The M6GT was spearheaded by the company’s founder Bruce McLaren, but only a few prototypes were ever built, and in 1970 the project was canceled following McLaren’s premature death.
McLaren Special Operations (MSO) had previously revealed a new example of the M6GT that really resembled the original version and used original old mods and reference photos to come up with one of the lookalike retro roads.
Now Bruce McLaren’s original dream road car, the M6GT, seems to be revived. The Instagram teaser transitions from old footage to a new and yet-to-be-released car. Bruce McLaren’s is also in the video with the audio overlay of him talking about his dreams of making a road car. “Somewhere down the line, I think it is bound to happen,” Bruce McLaren says.
McLaren has not made any announcements on the vehicle name or given any information about the car’s powertrain and features. The car will be unveiled on August 14, 2026, possibly as part of the Monterey Car Week festival. We will be fully committed to updating you once more information about the car is out.
