The Dongfeng M-Hero M817 has burst onto the scene in China and grabbed the headlines. In under a day, it has collected 9,713 refundable deposits, signaling huge interest in the SUV. It’s a brutish-looking 4×4 with a range‑extender hybrid powertrain delivering a combined 912 hp and 1,280 Nm of torque.
This monstrous power means the M817 can sprint to 100 km/h (62mph)in just 4.2 seconds, yet still manage up to 200 km(124mph) of pure electric range on a single charge. Starting at only about 329,900 Yuan (~$46,000), the M817 offers supercar power at a mainstream price — no wonder so many test-drivers have already put money down.
The M-Hero M817’s styling sets it apart from other lookalike SUVs on the road. Dongfeng will sell it in two flavors: a slick “City Edition,” with hidden door handles and low-drag wheels, and a hardcore “Off-Road Edition,” with exposed hinges, beadlock wheels, and a 12,500‑pound electric winch. At 5,100 mm long, 1,998 mm wide, and 1,899 mm tall, the M817 is substantial — though slightly smaller than Dongfeng’s even bigger M-Hero 917 model.
It still boasts serious off-road geometry: about a 33-degree approach angle, 34-degree departure angle, and 335 mm of ground clearance (rising to 385 mm with air suspension). This combination of bold looks and true off-road capability is rare in a modern SUV.
The inside of the M817 is straight out of a sci-fi cockpit. A 15.6-inch curved touchscreen floats in the center, running Huawei’s new HarmonyOS 5.0 infotainment system. Controls include a watch-style rotary knob and aviation-inspired toggle switches, giving the cabin a high-tech feel.
Dongfeng even loaded it with convenience: 13 power outlets onboard (including a 6 kW external “power discharge” socket) and dual 50W wireless phone chargers. Safety tech is extensive too – it features Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 4.0 driver-assist, capable of automatic parking and highway navigation assistance.
The M817 is built on a dual‑architecture platform that blends Dongfeng’s off-road EV chassis with Huawei’s “Tianyuan” hybrid system. You can get it as a plug-in hybrid or an extended-range EV, but in either case, a turbocharged 1.5‑liter petrol engine serves as a range extender. In the flagship PHEV model, this 1.5T engine drives a front and rear electric motor for 680 kW (912 hp) and 1,280 Nm of torque.
That enormous output lets the M817 hit 100 km/h (62mph) in just 4.2 seconds. Thanks to a specialized CATL battery, it can cover about 200 km on electric power alone (CLTC) and exceed 1,000 km total range, so it truly is an electric-first off-roader.
Could it go global? Doubtful for the US, Europe, or Africa, but the M817 may not stay China‑only. Dongfeng reportedly plans both left- and right-hand-drive versions, so it could reach overseas markets that allow it. Whatever happens, the M-Hero M817 clearly shows how Chinese carmakers are pushing the envelope: delivering supercar-like performance in a rugged SUV for mainstream money.
