Ford announced a new universal EV platform that would be able to support a variety of its vehicles. The vehicles will include midsize electric trucks, which will enter production in 2027.

Jim Farley, Ford’s CEO, promised last month that there would be a big breakthrough electric vehicle named Model T. Now, Ford has announced a new universal platform and universal EV production system, which will support the launch and production of the new mid-size electric pickup truck, which will start its production coming in 2027.

The truck will be based on the compact Maverick but would have an increased cabin space brought by its electric architecture, Ford claiming that it will have more passenger room than the Toyota RAV4, excluding the frunk and bed.

The details were too shallow, with much remaining under wraps, but Ford confirmed that the platform will depend on a 400-volt electrical architecture, meaning that it will be charging at a slower pace. Ford said that the battery architecture would be the right choice due to the vehicle’s size and also the goal to make it more affordable and low-priced.

Other features that would come on the new Ford pickup include over-the-air updates and the future BlueCruise, Ford’s hands-free driving assist system. The truck will be occupied with 5 passengers and is expected to start at around $30,000 thanks to its Universal EV platform, which has 20 percent fewer parts and 25 percent fewer fasteners.

Ford will see keeping its cost down by using lithium-ion phosphate batteries that the automaker says also save space; the battery pack structure will also act as a structural subassembly, which acts as the floor.

The pickup truck will be built in Louisville at Ford’s Assembly plant in Kentucky. Production is expected to begin in the year 2027, with the truck arriving in early 2028.
