Ford Motor Co. is vacating its 70-year-old headquarters, known as the Glass House. Located in Dearborn, Michigan, the Glass House has served as Ford’s HQ since 1956, but following the move to their new headquarters just nearby, the old building will be put under demolition.

The Glass House was rising till the 12th floor, featuring conference rooms and about 2000 employees’ workstations.

The new headquarters, which is located near Ford’s Dearborn campus, occupies about 21 million square feet and has only four floors, which may seem so small, but it’s bigger than its predecessors, not forgetting that it houses a 70,000 square foot lobby and cafe zone. It is expected to be completely worked on sometime in 2027.

Some major work is completely done, and as of now some workers have started working from there, and by November all workers will be sited at their new working stations. The move signals how Ford plans to provide digital services and the electrification plans in its lineup that will need modern industry labor and workstations.

In a statement published earlier on, Ford says that its new World HQ can enable up to 4,000 people to work there, and because of its 2.1 million square feet, one side glassed area, and four-story projectory, the HQ will be able to host another 10,000 employees to work there, with a walking distance between each.

According to Ford, the Glass House has an 18-monthdemolition period, with its adjacent credit building not left out of the demolition. This will push the demolition end dates between 2027 and 2028.

The breakdown for the cost of the project was kept unmentioned, and in 2019, just a few months from the groundbreaking, experts estimated that it would cost $941 million, while the Glass House, when it was announced in 1949, was estimated to cost $14 million, which is about $190 million today.
