After a year of investigation, Ford has issued a recall affecting about 694,271 vehicles in the United States due to fuel leak issues that could potentially cause a fire. The recall includes 2021 to 2024 Bronco Sport models and 2020 to 2022 Escape SUVs.

The problem involves fuel injectors, which may have a crack, allowing fuel to leak into the cylinder head, landing onto hot surfaces in the engine, such as the exhaust or turbo systems, possibly leading to a fire or breakdown if ignited by a small heat source.

The affected vehicles are equipped with Ford’s turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. About 0.3% of the population owning the recalled Broncos have shown up with the defect.

According to an article from Reuters, Ford estimates an aggregate cost of the recall action to be about $570 million, which will be reflected in the Company’s second quarter 2025 financial results.

Affected owners will get notification by mail and be instructed to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealership near them and have an interim fix that involves the installation of a software update capable of detecting a leak in the fuel injector. If a leak appears, it will reduce engine power and shut off fuel delivery.

At this time, Ford is developing a permanent fix, and owners will get notified for the second time when this final remedy will be available. Owners can check the NHTSA website to see if their vehicles are affected.
