  • Honda recalls about 440,000 Odyssey models due to a side airbag defect that can unexpectedly deploy due to harsh underbody impact.
  • About 25 injuries have been reported linked with the airbag, and there is no death reported.
  • The recall has affected models sold in the United States with year models 2018 to 2022, and owners are advised to take their minivans to a Honda dealership for the airbag to be reprogrammed or replaced.

Just in, Honda has issued a voluntary recall for almost 440,000 Odyssey models whose side airbags may deploy unexpectedly after hitting either a pothole or a speed bump too hard.

The recall has affected vans sold in the United States, and the models mentioned were sold between 2018 and 2022. The automaker has confirmed about 25 injuries that are linked to the faulty airbags, but there are no deaths that are connected to the issue reported.

The cause of the problem stems from within the airbag module, which has an excessively sensitive deployment threshold, which causes the side airbags to deploy without any warning when the underbody receives a harsh impact, generally when the car runs over a pothole or a speed bump or road debris. The side curtain or side airbags going off without any warning may cause a crash or injuries to the passenger.

Honda has asked owners to bring their affected models to an authorized dealer so that they can run the correct program or replace the airbag module with the correctly functioning one. Registered owners are expected to be contacted by mail or see their vehicle if affected by calling 888-234-2138 or visiting Honda’s recall website.
